Duck Down Music Inc. got its start in the mid-90s as a record label and cornered the market in independent Hip Hop with flagship group Black Moon making headway for offshoot groups Smif-N-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. As the years have gone on, the label has expanded outside its New York roots and signed a bevy of acts from varying regions.

Talib Kweli’s Blacksmith Records imprint, established in 2005 with Corey Smyth, has served as a home to female powerhouse MC Jean Grae, west coast rhyme slingers Strong Arm Steady, and Idle Warship which features singer Res and Kweli.

The likeminded labels have corralled artists from their respective camps for their upcoming “Duckdown Vs. Blacksmith” showcase at the 2011 College Music Journal Marathon & Film Festival taking place this Saturday (October 22) night in New York City. Read More...

Funny how time flies, so goes the saying.

Since the late 80s, iconic rap quartet A Tribe Called Quest has captivated Hip Hop listeners who still rabidly debate the merits of the veteran rap group’s second album. Released in September of 1991, The Low End Theory ushered in a more aggressive sound for the crew – going away from the sample loop heavy offerings of their debut People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.

Whereas the preceding album managed to highlight front man Q-Tip as the face of Tribe, Low End was fellow microphone rocker Phife Dawg’s coming out party. With their 1-2 punch solidified in the annals of rap, VH1 caught up with the longtime and formerly feuding rap pals as they reminisced over the creation of what’s considered to be their landmark classic. Today (August 29), globally beloved singer and entertainer Michael Jackson would have celebrated his 53rd birthday if not for his untimely and tragic passing in June of 2009. The King of Pop leaves behind a staggering legacy of music and memories spanning his 40-plus years in music. Recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records, Jackson has released influential works and introduced dance routines that current entertainers still try their best to respectfully mimic.

Born in Gary, Indiana, in 1958, Jackson’s humble Midwest roots were coupled with the driving force of his musician father Joseph corralling Michael and his brothers – collectively known as musical troupe The Jackson 5 – into the entertainment business, although as later revealed through interviews, Michael’s relationship with his father was strained amid allegations of physical and verbal abuse. However, Jackson would go on to credit his father for much of his musical success. Read More...

While the nation mourns the loss of Nick Ashford – one half of the iconic singer-songwriter team Ashford and Simpson with wife Valerie –it is important to note that the duo has been responsible for some of R&B greatest hits, finding fame with their pens as part of Motown Records’ songwriting team in the mid-60s before venturing out on their own as artists. As a member of the legendary Hip Hop crew Wu-tang Clan, Raekwon and his classic solo LP Only Built 4 Cuban Linx helped to define the sound the eclectic collective of New York rappers became famous for. A gritty street narrative backed up by dusty breaks and loops with several of his fellow Wu swordsmen in tow, most notably Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and his “purple tape” LP could be found blaring from street corners to the suburbs by rabid fans eager to connect to the Wu-tang movement.

OB4CL was released today (August 1) in 1995, a turning point in the rapidly changing Hip Hop landscape when the East Coast reigned supreme and still had the attention of the majors almost exclusively. Fifteen years later, a reflective and still celebrated Raekwon has done much to preserve the legacy of his solo debut – releasing a sequel in 2009 naturally titled Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...Pt. II. MTV News caught up with The Chef as he looked back to his debut album with the bravado of a world champion. Read More...

Although strong bonds have been forged in the often cutthroat climate within the music business, where partnerships seemingly fade overnight, it is refreshing to note that two young and continually rising stars have found a way to keep their connection genuine.

On today’s (March 23) edition of RapFix Live, G.O.O.D. Music and Def Jam recording artist Big Sean sat with Sway and added some much needed commentary on the inner workings of being a celebrity and the pressures of being perfect under the glare of the media’s ever watching eye.

Close friends inside and outside of music, rapper Big Sean and Chris Brown have shown massive respect for each other via the press. The R&B star, embroiled in all manner of bad press due to a reported angry outburst at Good Morning America Tuesday (March 22), heaped heavy accolades on the Kanye West mentee in an earlier MTV interview. “Big Sean is probably the most underrated artist,” said the F.A.M.E. star. He added, “Everybody kind of sleeps on him.”

Brown even credited his friend by saying Sean fathered a few styles that current rappers claim as their own – although he was reluctant to name any of these supposed thieves.

Big Sean was then asked by Sway to weigh in on Chris Brown’s media misfortune, and the Detroit rhyme spitter did not hold back in his response. “I think that’s so wack. I feel like when you're a celebrity, people dehumanize you and they forget you're a real person,” said the Finally Famous rapper speaking directly to Breezy’s 2009 assault case on then girlfriend Rihanna.

“He's a real person and, at that, he's a young dude too, man, and he made a mistake.”

Big Sean told Sway that he spoke with Brown on the phone shortly after the Tuesday incident in New York and offered a kind word in what was surely tense time for the singer. “We get paid to do what we love to do and have people that love us back. Don't let these questions get you down or anything”, said Sean to Brown.

Big Sean’s Def Jam debut Finally Famous drops May 3. Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. album is available for purchase now.
