Pioneering female rapper Lana “MC Lyte” Moorer has led the charge as a fresh and distinctive voice in the male-dominated genre of Hip Hop in the 80s while also remaining a living inspiration to newer icons such as Nicki Minaj and fellow Brooklyn native Lil’ Kim. Today (October 11), the longtime rap veteran celebrates her 40th birthday, reaching yet another milestone in the midst her storied and ongoing career.

A pre-teen Lyte began writing raps at age 12, eventually releasing her first single in the old school classic “I Cram To Understand U (Sam)” on her father’s Nat Robinson’s First Priority label. The younger sister of Brooklyn duo Milk Dee and Gizmo of the Audio Two got plenty of assistance from her brothers on her 1988 debut album Lyte As A Rock. Today (August 29), globally beloved singer and entertainer Michael Jackson would have celebrated his 53rd birthday if not for his untimely and tragic passing in June of 2009. The King of Pop leaves behind a staggering legacy of music and memories spanning his 40-plus years in music. Recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records, Jackson has released influential works and introduced dance routines that current entertainers still try their best to respectfully mimic.

Born in Gary, Indiana, in 1958, Jackson’s humble Midwest roots were coupled with the driving force of his musician father Joseph corralling Michael and his brothers – collectively known as musical troupe The Jackson 5 – into the entertainment business, although as later revealed through interviews, Michael’s relationship with his father was strained amid allegations of physical and verbal abuse. However, Jackson would go on to credit his father for much of his musical success. Read More...

Today, Houston legend and inventor of the “Chopped and Screwed” technique DJ Screw would have been 40 years old today if not for his tragic passing in November of 2000. The beloved DJ, nicknamed “The Originator” for inventing the “screw” sound, achieved posthumous fame after Houston’s rap scene began to flourish shortly after his death. With over 240 “chapters” of his infamous “screw-tapes” made available after his passing, DJ Screw and his lasting legacy continues to grow and expanding far beyond regional fame.

The reportedly reclusive disc jockey born Robert Earl Davis shied away from the spotlight, opting to work behind the scenes and crafting his sound. Forming the Screwed Up Click in the early 90s, Screw would work with future notables such as Lil Flip, Lil’ Keke, Big Hawk, Z-RO and Fat Pat. With several other members of the Click, Screw would craft his “screw-tapes” featuring the crew with much of the team’s success happening within Houston. Acts such as South Park Mexican and legendary duo UGK are counted as close affiliates of DJ Screw and his extended family. Read More...
