Former Def Jam rapper and Jay-Z signee Tru Life is mulling over a plea deal he’s been presented with that will have him serving 10 years in jail, with no option of an appeal. The charges against Tru (Robert Rosado)—second-degree murder, gang assault and assault—stem from a 2009 brawl that he and his brother Marcus Rosado were allegedly involved in that left one man stabbed to death. Saigon has been in contact with the Lower East Side rapper since he turned himself in on June 23, 2009 to authorities and offered MTV News his take on the situation.

“I don’t really know the ins and out of it, of what’s going on,” said Saigon of the options Tru is mulling over. “I’m just sad, saddened by the whole situation. Because I know he’s innocent. One thing you don’t want to do is go to trial and get 50 years, so… I trust he’s going to do the right thing. Only he knows what’s right for him. I would take it though. I wouldn’t go to trial.” Read More...

Rappers can make for some pretty good actors. Most recently, Ice Cube is in negotiation to join the upcoming film adaptation of late '80s TV show "21 Jump Street." While many rappers get accused of taking too much poetic license with their personae on the mic, actors are supposed to play make-believe. Here are some rappers turned actors who were able to not only make a successful transition to the silver screen, but avoided getting eternally typecast into the roles their hip-hop personalities on wax could have stuck them in. Sorry, we are not counting Mark "Marky Mark" Wahlberg.

Ice Cube
Rap Persona: Gangsta rap pioneer with N.W.A who also gained plenty of East Coast love when he was rolling with the Bomb Squad (Public Enemy).

Acting Resume: Playing Doughboy in "Boyz N Da Hood" wasn't exactly a stretch for Cube. But since O'Shea Jackson has gone from menacing roles to playing an unemployed Craig in "Friday," a militant college student in "Higher Learning" an undercover cop in "All About the Benjamins," an action hero in "XXX: State of the Union," to family-friendly fare like "Are We There Yet?" That's range.

Will Smith
Rap Persona: As the Fresh Prince, the Philadelphia rapper was the MC even your moms would have a hard time hating on. "Summertime" is a certified classic.

Acting Resume: When he's not overseeing the career of his daughter Willow, Will Smith is box-office gold. "I Am Legend" and "Hancock" all made ridiculous bank. From fighting aliens to bulking up to play Muhammad Ali to playing a dating coach in "Hitch," the Fresh Prince is acting royalty. Read More...

While fans wait for their copy of Lil Kim’s Black Friday mixtape in the mail, the Queen Bee drops a video to the title track. The clip opens with a voiceover of the Notorious BIG speaking on his female rap protégé, followed by audio of Diddy Combs commenting on her feud with Nicki Minaj.

“I’m the Blueprint you ain’t nothing brand new, check your posters and videos you’ll always be number two,” spits Kim over the instrumental to Pharoahe Monch’s “Simon Says,” that rhyme an interpolation of a Jay-Z line from his song “Ride or Die” (Vol 2… Hard Knock Life). Read More...

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have lost the Super Bowl, but hometown rapper Wiz Khalifa has plenty to smile about. “Black and Yellow” still sits at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the precocious MC has announced his own “Green Carpet” tour and is still nabbing recruits for his movement, whether fans or fellow MCs. Don’t mistake Skylar Grey for a neophyte act that came out of nowhere.

A few years ago MTV News caught up with Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda who in turn gave some shine to his artist Holly Brook. Shinoda was promoting his Fort Minor hip hop project, The Rising Tied, and on MTV’s behalf interviewed Brook, who is now professionally known as Skylar Grey—who most recently performed alongside Eminem and Dr. Dre at the 53rd Grammy Awards. At the time of the interview, Brook (who is now Grey, try to keep up), was about to release her album Like Blood Like Honey.

In the clip Brook/Grey can be seen performing background vocals and playing keys on Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go” along with Shinoda on stage. Brook/Grey at the time was a new signee to Linkin Park’s Machine Shop Recordings imprint but already had plenty of recording experience. Read More...

Lil Kim is still going at Nicki Minaj, this time for a fee.

The Big Momma finally released her long delayed mixtape, Black Friday, on Valentine’s Day. However, while lately most hip hop offer up mixtape projects as a free download (asking for an e-mail address at most), access to Lil Kim’s music comes at a premium of $9.99. Kim tweeted a link to her PayPal address, adding the incentive that the first 100,000 purchasers will receive autographed copies of the CD. Read More...

Skylar Grey is about to get a lot more popular.

The singer made her Grammy debut, performing her featured vocals from Dr. Dre and Eminem's "I Need a Doctor" during their set at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Grey, born Holly Brook Hafermann in Wisconsin, used to go by simply Holly Brook. The name should ring a bell to those familiar with Fort Minor, the hip-hop side project of Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda. In 2003, while living in California, she was signed to Linkin Park’s Machine Shop Recordings imprint, and appeared on "Where'd You Go" from Fort Minor's The Rising Tied. Pre-dating her Fort Minor work, she had already released three folk albums with her mom by age 15.
