During a commercial that played during halftime of Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat, Hov announced that his new LP would be released on July 4 and that he would be partnering with the cellphone giant. Samsung has purchased one millions copies of MCHG, which will be available for users of the Samsung Galaxy III, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II for free via a special mobile app three whole days before the project drops on Independence Day.
“We don’t have any rules, everyone’s trying to figure it out,” Jay says in the Samsung spot. “That’s why the internet is the Wild West…Wild Wild West. We need to write the new rules.”
In the three-minute clip, Jay let’s viewers get a glimpse of how he works in the studio, putting ideas for songs together, how he collaborates with legendary producers like Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beats and Rick Rubin, who recently helped Kanye West pare down his latest opus, Yeezus.
“Pretty much what the album is about is like this duality of how do you navigate your way through this whole thing through success, through failures, through all this and remain yourself,” Jay explains. “That’s what hip hop is, it’s an emotion. The idea is to finish the album and drop it. Giving it to the world at one time and letting ‘em share it and it goes out.”
