Drake may have a negative view of new friends, but he has to be all smiles about the possibility of getting some new awards. The “5 AM in Toronto” MC just nabbed 12 nominations to lead the field for the 2013 BET Awards, set to air on June 30.
The Toronto rapper dominated the “Video of the Year” category with five noms for his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar (“Poetic Justice”), 2 Chainz (“No Lie”), and A$AP Rocky (“Fu–in’ Problems”) and for his own singles, “HYFR,” from his Grammy winning LP, Take Care, and “Started From the Bottom,” from his upcoming third studio album, Nothing Was the Same.
The OVO frontman will be competing for the VOY with Rihanna (“Diamonds”), Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z (“Suit & Tie”), Kanye West (“Mercy”), Miguel (“Adorn”) and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (“Thrift Shop”).
Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz tied for second most noms with eight apiece, with A$AP Rocky picking up five, including a nod for Video Director of the Year, Miguel nabbing four and RiRi and JT and Yeezy each netting three.
Another notable category to keep an eye on is “Best New Artist,” which has Kendrick Joey Bada$$ and Mr. “All Gold Everything,” Trinidad James. The “Best Group” category also packs a whallop, with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Slaughterhouse and The Throne going head to head.
Tamar Braxton, Charlie Wilson and Chris Tucker, who will host the ceremony at L.A.’s Nokia Theater, were on hand to announce the nominees at a press conference Tuesday (May 14). “I’m still fairly new at this thing right here, so to receive an award of this caliber means a lot to me,” said K-Dot, who will perform the night before during the BET Experience 2013.
Chris Brown and R. Kelly are slated to perform during the live broadcast.
