Rick Ross’ Explanation For ‘U.O.E.N.O’ Fuels Rape Lyrics Debate

BET Hip Hop Awards 2012 - Audience and Show

Rick Ross is featured on Rocko’s single “U.O.E.N.O.” which debuted on his Gift of Gab 2 mixtape back in February, but the song became a hot topic this week when writer and activist Rosa Clemente zeroed in on some of its controversial lyrics. Specifically, she took issue with a couple of Ross’ lines that seem to make casual reference to rape. Now Ross’ explanation for the line is sparking even more anger and debate.

“Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it,” Rozay spits on the track. As the topic gained more steam, Ross eventually addressed the lyrics during an interview with Q 93.3 in New Orleans.

“There was a misunderstanding with a lyric, a misinterpretation,” he said. “I would never use the term ‘rape’ in my records and as far as my camp. Hip-hop don’t condone that, the streets don’t condone that, nobody condones that. So I just wanted to reach out to all my queens that’s on my timeline, all the sexy ladies, the beautiful ladies that have been reaching out to me with the misunderstanding: We don’t condone rape, and I’m not with that.”

Did Rick Ross’ explanation that the lyric was a ‘misinterpretation’ alleviate fans, and specifically, women’s concerns though? It actually seemed to add more fuel to the fire based on the feedback:

@BethLanai a facebook friend just posted this on the link to the OHN Rick Ross article: “Rape is not a semantics game.”

@IamMelody Rick Ross doesn’t condone rape BUT rapping about putting drugs in a drink w/o her knowing then taking her home & having sex w/ her is ok o_0

@JOYdaGREAT Well if u r a rick ross fan you probably don’t care what his explanation is and will continue to listen to him anyway

@RIZNUT Dear Rick Ross: you didn’t clear up anything in that interview. You avoided it. Explain the rape lyrics or I won’t believe the brick lyrics

@KNealTX Rick Ross trippin wit that molly line #smh

@poeticlyspkng Dear #rickross- just because you didn’t use the word rape doesn’t make it anything short of rape. #weheardyou

@CandyCornball Rick Ross says the “woman is the most precious gift to man”. Nope. I’m not a gift. Misogyny cloaked in cotton candy.

@1017_Josh I think it’s weird how in Rick Ross’ new song he blatantly raps about date raping a girl and everyone is just kinda cool with it.. lol

@NewMoney_Stokes Rick Ross has made it hard for himself by spitting those bars that glorify rape.
