See Kendrick Lamar’s Initial Reaction To Jay-Z’s Verse On ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe (Remix)’

There’s no doubt that Kendrick Lamar has been making waves in hip-hop for years now, but the Compton rapper really hit a high note with the release of his critically-acclaimed album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, which extended the tale he began to weave on earlier projects like Section 80. The project was golden without a long list of flashy features, but when Jay-Z decided to lend a verse to the remix of “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe,” it was certainly a moment to celebrate. TDE CEO Top Dawg took that into consideration, holding onto Hov’s verse for a full week before letting Kendrick hear it…and his reaction when he finally did, was priceless.

During a studio session in NYC with his entire TDE crew—including Jay Rock, ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul—Kendrick’s team set him up by telling them that they’d just ‘changed up some music on the second verse.’ As Jay begins to spit his first lines, it takes Kendrick a second to register what’s going on, and a hint of a smile remains on his face as he listens to the verse with laser attention. When it’s over, the reaction was almost immediate: “Damnnn, [he] bodied that sh—. Dammnn, that’s grimey.”

Sure, Jay did his thing on the verse, but Kendrick’s addition to the remix was one for the history books. He revealed that it took him an entire day to complete his portion of the track because he was so excited, and fans and industry heads have conceded that he shines brightly next to one of rap’s greatest lyricists, with ease.
