Best Hip-Hop Love Songs: 50 Cent, Fabolous And More Make Picks

We know that love is in the air today and what better ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to have a few MCs make their picks for the greatest hip-hop love song of all time? Fabolous, Juelz Santana, Pusha T and more weigh in.

Leading up to Valentine’s Day, MTV News’ hip-hop team went on a mission to have rappers offer up their picks for the greatest hip hop-love songs. Some responses were unpopular; some were classic, and some very new school.

Fabolous agreed that LL Cool J’s “I Need Love” won hands down. “Number one has to be LL, ‘I Need Love’ — that’s first and foremost,” he told MTV News. “That was one of the first heartfelt rap songs and he captured it.” 50 Cent definitely agreed, adding, “I think his career is what it is based on that. The entire career, ‘Ladies Love Cool James,’ you gotta give him that.”

Juelz Santana didn’t deny the power of that song but thought Method and Mary J Blige’s “You’re All I Need to Get By” offered a little bit more. “It captured everything. It captured the love, but it captured the ‘hood,” he said.

Although there was an overall consensus for LL, producer Mike Will Made-It thought it was all about the present moment and picked Future’s “Turn Off the Lights” as one of his favorites. “It’s not about what happened then, it’s about what’s goin’ on now,” Mike Will stated with conviction.

But there was no convincing Pusha T that his choice didn’t deserve some love. Push took it back to 1991 with Main Source’s classic single “Looking at the Front Door.” “That record is unstoppable. That record is everything and it’s been everything forever,” he said, fully aware of how unpopular his choice might be. “That particular record, top to bottom, is probably the best record ever made.”
