Talib Kweli recently released visuals for his single “Upper Echelon,” and the Brooklyn rapper took the time to break down the video frame by frame for MTV News, revealing that the visuals were shot backstage at a Black Star show in LA.

“This video was very very spontaneous. I called [the directors] up. I was like I got a show with Mos Def tonight. Come through and film some backstage stuff and we’ll throw a video together,” he explained, adding, “Black Star shows are a real fun affair. Black Star shows are like the upper echelon of hip-hop to me so I felt like that was a good place to come and shoot a video.”

Most notably, Kweli is gearing up for his latest gig as one of the performers alongside The Roots for the upcoming Prince Tribute Concert taking place at Carnegie Hall March 7.
