Beyonce isn’t the only one making headlines by singing America’s national anthem. 19-year-old Zoanette Johnson from Tulsa, Oklahoma, earned a ticket to Hollywood on "American Idol" for her over-the-top rendition. If not for her incredible range, which included notes so high that judges like Mariah Carey were left speechless and Keith Urban almost falling out of his chair, it was Johnson’s confident and colorful personality that swept away the judges, especially Nicki Minaj.
“I’m ready to take my crown,” declared Johnson aka “Big Crazy Barb" who brought everything – drama, an eye-catching outfit, a sassy attitude – to her audition, via Rap-Up.
If you haven’t been watching the auditions so far, know that Nicki’s presence as a judge has been one of the most entertaining aspects of "Idol" this season. From her outrageous contestant nicknames (including collard greens, purple boy, Edgar Allen Poe, and curly) to her animated reactions, Ms. Minaj can be credited with adding life to each episode. That’s why it makes sense that when she met a contestant as wild as her, there was an instant connection.
“I love you, I am obsessed with you,” Minaj said during the critique. “Thank you for being a superstar,” she added.
At one point when Johnson pulled out a gritty dance move, Nicki held her chest and leaned on fellow judge Randy Jackson, looking completely overwhelmed. It looks like the Queen Barb has met her ultimate Barb, and we’re thinking that Johnson’s outrageousness might even give the Queen a run for her money.
