Gold is great, but Platinum is a million times better. After notching a gold plaque for selling over 500,000 units of his debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, Kendrick Lamar got the nod from SoundScan that his critically-acclaimed opus’ second single, “Swimming Pools (Drank),” has been certified platinum for pushing over 1,000,000 units.
The song’s popularity comes as no surprise, considering that the official video on K.Dot’s YouTube channel has over 26 million views.
The pathos-laden track advocates teetotalism as the Section.80 MC paints a vivid picture of the dangers of alcoholism with the clever use of his own conscience with lines like this: “Okay, now open your mind up and listen to me Kendrick/I am your conscience, if you do not hear me/Then you will be history Kendrick.”
Back in July of 2012, the Interscope rookie told MTV News about what he’s trying to convey with his music.
“We’re here to spread this music all across the world,” Kendrick told MTV News in June, after performing at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. “It started in my backyard, in Compton, and now I’m fittin’ to take it to the next level and take it worldwide because I feel like the world needs to hear this. I’ve been ready for a long time.”
Kendrick recently rocked the stage at the Hammersmith Apollo in London for 5,000 diehard fans. Additionally, he and his Black Hippy collective (Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock) will be headlining 2013 Paid Dues Festival on March 30.
