Ab-Soul And Kendrick Lamar Drop ‘ILLuminate’ Video

By Rob Markman

Ab-Soul has a lot to share and in his new video for “ILLuminate,” the Black Hippy MC lends his light and helps others shine.

Directed by Fredo Tovar and Scott Fleishman, the video for the Control System single starts off in a post-apocalyptic setting. While a survival group makes due with scraps and lost relics, one comes across the vinyl version of Ab’s digitally-released LP and gets an extra does of inspiration by the time the needle hits the grove.

“Back when I first grabbed that pen, I told myself I was gonna win/ And I ain’t know when, but it was gon’ end/ Up happenin’ I want in/ So you can take your top five list, dead or alive and put me after Em,” Soulo spits, toasting his own rap prowess and at the same time saluting Eminem.

Like the majority of Soul’s work “ILLuminate” is a departure from the standard rap fare. Instead of boasting gaudy jewelry with swag raps, Ab and the track’s guest Kendrick Lamar ponder their place in rap. From the looks of things, the legacy these two leave will surely stand the test of time.
