The Notorious B.I.G.: How One Bullet Changed Hip-Hop Forever

By Rob Markman

The Notorious B.I.G.’s spirit may still live on, but on Friday (December 7) gruesome details about the rap great’s death were brought back to life after his autopsy report was dug up. It was revealed that though B.I.G. was struck by four bullets, it was one shot that entered the rapper’s hip and traveled through his body which actually killed him and changed the course of hip-hop music.

TMZ unearthed the documents which revealed the horrid March 9, 1997 Los Angeles shooting and while the report surely rehashes bad memories for Biggie’s family and fans it does shed some light on the “Mo Money Mo Problems” MC’s last moments. It also makes us here at RapFix wonder that if things would’ve gone just a little differently, the Notorious One would still be here with us.

According to the report and accompanying diagram Big was shot once in the left arm, in the back and on his left thigh. Those three shots were non-fatal and two of them exited his body missing all vital organs. The bullet that entered his left arm traveled down to his wrist but didn’t pose a threat.

The deadly shot however first traveled through the passenger door of the Chevy Suburban that Big was seated in and then entered the rapper’s right hip. The bullet then moved through Biggie’s body hitting his colon, liver, heart and his left lung before stopping in his left shoulder.

The 24-year old rapper was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Hospital where doctors performed a thoracotomy, but he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. It has been over 15 years since the Notorious B.I.G’s death and still no one has been officially charged with his murder.

After his death, Bad Boy Records released Biggie’s diamond-certified double LP Life After Death and he was crowned by many as the greatest rapper of all-time, with his style still influencing an entire generation of artists. There have been two posthumous albums released, a greatest hits LP and in 2009 there was the biopic “Notiorious” based on the rapper’s life and legacy. There’s no doubt, that even in death, we will always love Big Poppa.
