UK Video Of The Week: Scrufizzer – ‘Rap Rave’

By Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson

Artist Name: Scrufizzer
Location: London, UK
Musical Style: “Just bouncy and fizzy…”

Scrufizzer was one of the MCs who came up through grime’s “new wave” in 2010 but, much like Kozzie, he no longer needs a tag to sustain his buzz. The west Londoner’s style was often compared to that of Dizzee Rascal–who, last year, asked Scrufizzer to jump on a track with him for his DirteeTV.com mixtape. However, with time, people gradually began to appreciate the uniqueness of the young man’s tone and overall delivery.

Co-signed by Def Jam UK and BBC Radio 1Xtra’s hip-hop expert, DJ Semtex, Mr Fizzy Flow has been successful in capturing both the grime and hip-hop audiences, which recently led to the much-hyped Angel Haze calling on him to spit a few lines on the official remix of her club hit, “Werkin’ Girls.”

Taking it back to his rave MC roots, Scrufizzer has released the video for his official debut single on Ministry Of Sound, entitled “Rap Rave.” Produced by Paperbwoy, the beat is full of Neptunes-like claps, but the 90s-rave breakdown brings it back to originality–and the artsy visuals by Hattie Stewart and John Moore makes the whole package just one big trippy treat!

RapFix’s “UK Video Of The Week” is a weekly column by UK-based music journalist, Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson, designed to give us a closer look at hip-hop across the pond. Stay tuned.
