A new Lifetime docu-series starring Whitney Houston’s family is set to premiere on Lifetime, and nothing is held back. In a preview for the upcoming show, titled “The Houstons: On Our Own” Whitney’s 19-year-old daughter announces to the family that she’s engaged to Houston’s godson Nick Gordon, and the news doesn’t go over so well.
The new super trailer, released Wednesday (October 10) is an appetizer chock full of dramatic sizzle, sure to entice viewers to come along for the ride as the family tries to pick up the pieces and mend their broken hearts, extend Whitney’s legacy and stabilize the life of her only child, Bobbi Kristina.
The unfortunate circumstances surrounding Whitney’s death were only exacerbated when her daughter’s antics spiraled out of control, including suspected drug use and her highly controversial relationship with a boy most fans believed to be Whitney’s adopted son, Nick Gordon.
“We don’t shy away from any tabloid topics, like Nick, whether he is her brother or is he blood related or not blood related,” the show’s producer Tracey Baker-Simmons told MTV News. “Now he’s the boyfriend and how the family really feels about it and dealing with it and where Bobbi and her father Bobby’s relationship stands. There’s a lot of Bobby talk and a surprise ending as it relates to that.”
Judging by the trailer, fans will get an unprecedented look into the family’s life, up to and including Whitney’s sister-in-law and manager Pat Houston’s management of her estate and Cissy Houston’s volatile relationship with her granddaughter. “I have been working with Simmons-Shelley over the past few years developing a project suitable for myself and our family,” Pat Houston said in a statement earlier this year. “The unexpected passing of Whitney certainly affects the direction of the show. However, it is my hope that others will be enlightened as they watch our family heal and move forward.”
The show debuts on Lifetime on October 24 at 9 p.m.
