Kendrick Lamar Performs, Wins Lyricist Of The Year At Hip Hop Awards 2012

Compton’s Kendrick Lamar took home one of the most coveted awards at tonight’s 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards. K Dot took home “Lyricist of the Year,” beating out veterans like Nas and Jay-Z. “I’m overwhelmed man,” said Kendrick in a bright red shirt as RZA presented him the award. “Came a long way, Compton. LA in general. It’s hip-hop from the heart.”

After an outfit change, the rapper then performed “The Recipe” and “Swimming Pools (Drank).” Both songs appear on his forthcoming debut also good kid m.A.A.d city, dropping next week.

Recently, Kendrick shared with Power 105′s The Breakfast Club that his Lyricist accolade was overshadowed by the fighting at the awards. “Nobody wanted to talk about that Lyricist of the Year award. I went backstage and I’m hearing all type of rumbling and stuff and I’m like, ‘What’s happening?’” he recalled. His security told him to stay in his dressing room. “Next thing you know I found out it’s a scuffle or what not.”
