UK Video Of The Week: Fekky Feat. Young Spray & Frisco – ‘Bang’

By Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson

Artist Name: Fekky
Location: London, UK
Musical Style: “Bouncy, wavy, hard hip-hop with a vibe. It’s feel-good music, and it’s great for the clubs.”

At first, I purposely didn’t take any notice of the street buzz surrounding south London’s Fekky. I couldn’t help but think, ‘Here’s another guy from the hood who just wants to get in the rap game to bump up his hood fame.’ But when the simple-flowing rhymer dropped his Ring Ring Trap track, I couldn’t help but nod along to his beat. “The rap thing started out as a hobby, really,” Fekky tells RapFix. “I was making the tracks for myself and my people, but it just so happened that certain people outside of my circle liked what I was doing so I started putting it out there.”

Lovers of UK rap have really warmed to Fekky’s heat (pun not intended), and he has also found fans in the likes of grime stars, JME and Skepta – who, in 2011, made him his one to watch for 2012. Fekky will soon be teaming up with DJ Whoo Kid to release an exciting new mixtape, but that’s not all: “I’ll be working on a joint EP with Slic Vic, I’ve got a song with Skepta in the pipeline, and also another one with Wretch 32, so make sure you look out for them. I want everyone to expect the unexpected.”

Fekky’s latest contribution to music was definitely unexpected. On the catchy Bang, Fekky is joined  by north London’s Young Spray and, surprisingly, grime MC, Frisco. “I wanted to bring grime and rap together and see what we could come up with,” he says. “By the time I got back the finished product, I was definitely not disappointed.” This week’s “UK Video Of The Week” comes from Fekky, Young Spray and Frisco, with Bang – the track title pretty much speaks for itself.

RapFix’s “UK Video Of The Week” is a new weekly column by UK-based music journalist, Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson, designed to give us a closer look at hip-hop across the pond. Stay tuned.
