Artist Name: Kozzie
Location: London, UK
Musical Style: “Hyperactive, clever, grimey and very underground.”
In 2010, a fresh-faced batch of MCs knocked down the door of the UK’s grime scene with force. The “new wave”, a phrase coined by myself and Laura ‘Hyperfrank’ Brosnan to describe the exciting new underground talent, included Kozzie, Merky Ace, Rival, Dream Mclean, Marger, Scrufizzer, Maxsta and a select few others. However, they have all since earned their place in the scene without having the hype of the wave to keep them afloat.
South London’s Kozzie is an MC whose career I’ve had the joy of seeing blossom from the very beginning. After seeing him jump on a set at Tim & Barry’s JUST JAM event two years ago, it was clear to see that the young man had a hunger for the mic, a hunger which I hadn’t witnessed in grime for quite a while. Kozzie’s straight-up braggadocio and aggressive flow would later see him go on to become the frontman of one of the scene’s biggest tracks, 2011’s Destruction (Spooky’s Spartan).
A few club bangers and a controversial clash later, Kozzie’s aim now is to let more people know about the exciting, London-born genre that he is clearly delighted to be part of. “I want to see grime branching out more, becoming more noticed worldwide and be accepted in the mainstream,” Kozzie tells RapFix. “I love making grime music, and I hope that more and more people will see my passion for it.”
This week’s “UK Video Of The Week” comes from Kozzie and JME, with I’m Grime. “Working with JME was great fun. It was a totally new experience for me,” says Kozzie. The two MCs go back-to-back over a Teddy Music beat and let us know what it really means to live the life of a grime-loving member of society.
