We haven’t heard much new music from J. Cole since he dropped his Roc Nation debut Cole World: The Sideline Story last fall, but the North Carolina native made an appearance at Mike Barber and DJ Spynfo’s Mic Check showcase in NYC last night where he shared a new verse from a track called “Chaining Day” Before spitting the verse, though, Cole also explained why we haven’t heard too much from him lately.
“I ain’t drop nothing in a while because I feel like we in this digital age where sh– moves so fast,” he said. “N—-s got songs every week, you can’t even keep up with this sh–.”
While introducing his verse–which he was spitting for the first time–he told the audience, “This is about where I’m at now, about being a smart young man who was supposed to know better. I told myself I would never become that guy. I’ma be a rapper but I ain’t never gonna be that ni–a,” he said, before pointing to his huge chain and laughing. “And then..what happened?”
