On Tuesday (June 18) producers of the acclaimed production “Fela!” (Jay-Z, Will and Jada Smith and Questlove) announced the New York return of the award winning show. Currently on its world tour, “Fela!” will make its stop in New York from July 9 to August 4, with a limited run of 32 performances at the Al Hirschfeld Theater located at 302 West 45th Street.
Partnering with Ruth & Stephen Hendel and The National Theatre of Great Britain, the recipient of three 2010 Tony Awards (Best Choreography, Best Costumes, Best Sound Design), Fela! will be directed and choreographed by TonyAward-winner Bill T. Jones and lead by Aaron Johnson, the world renowned Antibalas along with members of the NYC Afrobeat community will perform Kuti’s energetic stage play.
Fela! is an inspiring tale based of the life of Fela Kuti, the man responsible for the creation of Afrobeat, a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm. The play unfolds as it tells the story of Kuti’s life as an artist and human rights activist that targeted Nigeria’s corrupt dictatorships throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Jay-Z also recently announced the opening of a new branch of his 40/40 Club within the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Set to open September 28, the club will only be available to ticket holders for NBA games, concerts and other Barclay related events.
