Childish Gambino, also known as "Community" actor/comedian Donald Glover, is one of the more humorous rappers in the game, so it's no surprise that his most recent composition features a collaboration with alternative icon (and visionary jokey rapper) Beck. Entitled "Silk Pillow," the song could have been plucked straight from the mid-'90s.
As pianos echo and sparse drums provide the boom-bap, both artists trade lines with free-associative, punchline-heavy lyricism reminiscent of Beck's early hits like "Loser." The song, which was reportedly co-produced by Beck, is slated to appear on Gambino's upcoming as-of-yet-untitled mixtape.
Beck, who has kept out of the spotlight in recent years to produce records for indie luminaries like South Youth's Thurston Moore and Stephen Malkmus of Pavement, is in something of a personal comeback phase. He's currently playing a series of summer tour dates and also released a track today (May 30) with Jack White entitled "I Just Started Hating Some People Today."
