The teaser trailer for Nas’ music video for the “The Don” hit the web today. The clip features kinetic shots of New York skyscrapers and Nas amid party goers, concluding with him being escorted to a classic white Rolls Royce with graphics stating that the full visuals are coming soon.
Nas is currently at work on his tenth album studio album, Life is Good, which is due this summer. “The Don” combines production work from Salaam Remi, Da Internz and late legend Heavy D.
Nas recently explained how the single came about, telling MTV News. “When Salaam played me the beat for it, I said, ‘That’s the single — do this and do that and we’re golden.’ When we heard that Heavy D died, of course we were messed up, and Salaam called me and told me, ‘You know your record “The Don”? You know who gave me that, right?’
“He’s like, ‘Heavy D gave me that,” Nas continued. “He liked what we did with the other single, “Nasty,” and he sent me this record.’ And the rest is history,”
Next week the Queens lyricist will be featured on VH1’s “Behind the Music.” Initially Nas was very reluctant to do the special, telling MTV news, “It was tough. I didn’t want to do ‘Behind the Music,”.”I didn’t. But at some point, if you don’t tell your story, somebody else will. So I gave them a little peek inside. It can’t hurt, just a little peek inside.”
In a clip from the special Nas talks about his early life in the infamous Queensbridge Housing Projects and his rise to become a prominent MC. Nas also mentions his apprehension to speak about his life. “It was tough. I didn’t want to do ‘Behind the Music, I didn’t. But at some point, if you don’t tell your story, somebody else will. So I gave them a little peek inside. It can’t hurt, just a little peek inside.”
Nas’ “Behind the Music” debuts Wednesday, April 18 at 9 p.m. ET on VH1.
