One of the highlights from this weekend’s Coachella music festival was a rare performance by The Weeknd. The usually mysterious and usually reticent singer/songwriter crooned a robust half-hour set of songs like “The Morning,” “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls,” and “Outside” from his three mixtapes: Thursday, Echoes of Silence and the critical darling House of Balloons.
Although initially not advertised as being streamed live, like many of the festival’s other acts, the performance was shared via YouTube much to the glee of Weeknd fans around the world. The singer’s official fan Twitter shared “UPDATE: The Weeknd’s live performance at Coachella will be streamed by popular demand!” Because of this, a viral effect ensued and The Weeknd and several song titles became instant trending topics on Twitter.
Even fellow Canadian (and collaborator on “Crew Love”) Drake sent his affections to The Weeknd, “YOUR TIME TONIGHT!” Drake’s longtime producer/engineer Noah “40” Shebib described the experience of working with The Weekend to MTV News last year. “Weeknd is obviously someone very close to us and our family. He’s from Toronto and someone we’ve been associated with and working with for quite some time,” he said. “So that’s close to home, that’s easy. He’s in and out of the studio whatever the case is — that’s family.”
The Weeknd is embarking on an international tour hitting NYC, Boston, Chicago, Washington D.C. and more in the U.S. as well as stops in Canada, Spain and London’s Wireless Fest.
