Is he or isn’t he? In the week leading up to MTV News’ “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” debate there was already quite a bit of controversy surrounding J.Cole. After Cole’s name didn’t appear on a “Hottest” nominees list that was circulating throughout the Internet, fans were in a tizzy and the Fayetteville, North Carolina MC took notice.

“Yeah I saw the list. I don’t know it’s like, a list is a list,” J. Cole told MTV News on Friday in Los Angeles. “Whether I’m on it or not. Even if I was on it. If I was on that list they would find another person to be up in arms about.”

The official roll-out for MTV News’ “Hottest MCs in the Game” list will begin on Monday, February 13 and the #10 MC will be revealed online at MTVNews.com. Every day next week a new “Hottest MC” will be revealed. Then on Sunday, February 19 the top 5 “Hottest” will be revealed during a special airing of “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” On MTV 2.

At this point not even Cole himself knows if he has made the Top 10, but he his grateful for all the fan support thus far. “I’m very happy at the fact that my fans, even people who aren’t big fans but they just know that– I’m happy to see that reaction from them,” he said. “But if it wasn’t me it would be somebody else. That’s just the nature of a list, so imagine when the top 10 is really announced, I’m sure it’ll be drama then.”

Still, make no mistake, J. Cole believes that he belongs in the conversation amongst raps elite. “Do I think I deserve to be on it? Yeah come on, of course,” he said confidently. “Even when I didn’t deserve to be on it, I thought I deserved to be on it a couple of years ago when I really wasn’t as hot as i might be right now.”

Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch “MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with “Sucker Free Certified” at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
