Mac Miller is having the best day ever! Today the 19-year-old Pittsburgh MC is officially #1 on the Billboard 200 after selling more than 144,000 copies of his first LP Blue Slide Park. What makes the moment even more special is that Mac is the first indie artist to have his debut album debut at #1 in 16 years.

Technically Tha Dogg Pound’s 1995 Dogg Food marks the last time an indie act accomplished such a feat, but while the LP was distributed independently by Priority Records it was released in conjunction with the very major Deathrow/Interscope. Miller’s BSP on the other hand was released on November 8 by Rostrum Records and distributed by INgrooves via Fontana Distribution (Universal’s independent distro arm).

The album, which was named after Mac’s favorite childhood hangout is an eclectic collection of hip-hop jams. The title track as well as the lively “Party on Fifth Ave” bring BSD a boom-bap element while “Under the Weather” and the rambunctious “Up All Night” pack more of a punk rock punch.

There is no doubt that Miller has seen his star rise, especially now, but with Blue Slide Park the breakout rapper hopes to hold on to some sense of normalcy. “Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at,” Miller told MTV News in July of the album title’s significance. “Being two going down slides and then being six playing Little League and hanging out there, then being older coming back there to drink and smoke and party, running from the cops. And now going back there just to chill out and drink a beer.

“No matter what happens in life, no matter where you go, where you’re off to, what happens with the park, that slide will always be blue. That will always be Blue Slide Park no matter what,” he said. “You can go to New York and live for 10 years and become a huge business mogul and then come back to the ‘Burgh and no matter how much money you got, that slide is still blue.”

And Blue Slide Park will always be #1!
