Duck Down Music Inc. got its start in the mid-90s as a record label and cornered the market in independent Hip Hop with flagship group Black Moon making headway for offshoot groups Smif-N-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. As the years have gone on, the label has expanded outside its New York roots and signed a bevy of acts from varying regions.
Talib Kweli’s Blacksmith Records imprint, established in 2005 with Corey Smyth, has served as a home to female powerhouse MC Jean Grae, west coast rhyme slingers Strong Arm Steady, and Idle Warship which features singer Res and Kweli.
The likeminded labels have corralled artists from their respective camps for their upcoming “Duckdown Vs. Blacksmith” showcase at the 2011 College Music Journal Marathon & Film Festival taking place this Saturday (October 22) night in New York City.
On the Duck Down side, label co-founder Buckshot, Tek & Steele of duo Smif-N-Wessun, Pharoahe Monch, Chicago duo Kidz In The Hall and Canadian newcomer Promise will lead the way. On the Blacksmith side, Talib Kweli and Jean Grae will hold it down for their squad. DJ and producer Statik Selektah will be spinning a special set featuring artists and music from his upcoming Population Control compilation album which features Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA, Freddie Gibbs, Mac Miller, Bun B and DJ Premier among others.
The doors open at 8 p.m. ET at the Music Hall of Williamsburg with the show beginning at 9 p.m. ET. For fans that can’t make the CMJ showcase, the show will be streaming live on http://redbullusa.com/.
