Royce Da 5’9’s ‘Hi, Rihanna’ Line Gets A Response Following BET Cypher

On Monday’s airing of the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards, the “Shady 2.0 Cypher” featuring Shady Records artists Yelawolf and rap quartet Slaughterhouse has been all the buzz on the Web, in particular Slaughterhouse rapper and Detroit mainstay Royce Da 5’9’s now infamous “Hi, Rihanna” line. Although the line itself became a brief top trending topic on Twitter, it appears that the carefully aimed bars reached their intended target – and even yielded a response.

Yesterday, Barbadian pop princess Rihanna tweeted a simple “Hi, @RoyceDa59” to the rapper, resulting in a multitude of retweets of the salutation. Royce, a heavy user of the social media network, responded back with a retweet of the greeting with a simple reply of “*Waves*” added as a comment. As a result, the ex of his Slaughterhouse team Tahiry joined in on the jokes and even Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons hopped on the “Hi, Rihanna” bandwagon.

Yesterday on BET’s “106 & Park” program, Royce spoke with hosts Terrence and Rosci about the worldwide reaction to the line and how a chance meeting at the V Festival earlier this year in England inspired the verse.

“Like, I’m just a Detroit guy. Everybody is treating me like I’m famous now but I still feel regular,” said the refreshingly humble Nickel Nine. “She came up to me [At the V Festival] and told me that she likes one of my songs. So, I just felt like, ‘If you tell me that again, we go together.’ It has to happen. So, you know, I express myself through my music. I just thought it was a line I was going to say. I didn’t know she was going to hear it or what, but I didn’t know it was going to become this.”

The “this” Royce is referring to is the fervor in which fans discussed the line and the press it has gained thus far. According to Royce, the line top trended on Twitter for 20 hours. No official word from either camp has been released about the exchange nor has there been public plans made to take the discussion further.
