Lyrical titans Black Thought and Talib Kweli, former collaborators on tracks past, both share a bond outside of music by sharing a very special day. The Philadelphia Roots band front man and Brooklyn bomber both celebrate birthdays today (October 3).
The elder Black Thought, born Tariq Trotter, has remained a staunch presence amongst the rap elite as the lead rapper and vocalist for Hip Hop super band and late night television fixtures The Roots. Armed with potent lyrics and considered one of rap’s best live MCs, the 40-year-old (according to online sources) rap vet stands atop a towering heap of other gifted rappers who found fame in the 90s. Black Thought has enjoyed success in an offshoot group Money Makin’ Jam Boys with old ally Dice Raw, southern spitter. STS and fellow Philly reps P.O.R.N. and Truck North.
Talib Kweli also made a name for himself in the 90s as part of powerhouse duo Black Star alongside fellow BK native Mos Def. Later, Talib joined forces with Cleveland producer Hi-Tek to form the group Reflection Eternal – releasing two albums together while fans rabidly await a reported Black Star reunion. The prolific Talib Kweli in all has graced nine projects with his voice, five of those as a solo artist. The Blacksmith Records head honcho presides over a stable of artists that include Jean Grae, West Coast rhyme slingers Strong Arm Steady and R&B singer Res pairing with Talib Kweli in the group Idle Warship.
Talib and Thought have rocked with each other in the past on the track “Guerilla Monsoon Rap” produced by Kanye West and featuring the rap talents of Pharoahe Monch. They also did a track last year with R&B singer Chrisette Michele titled “Let Freedom Reign” as well.
Here is a hearty happy birthday shout to Black Thought and Talib Kweli from the staff of RapFix!
