Another edition of “RapFix Live” is in the bag and “the cornerstone of Hip Hop” continues to make its mark as one of the best live rap talk shows around. On Wednesday (August 10), the couches of “RapFix Live” were graced with the presence of Detroit rhyme slinger Royce Da 5’9 along with an in-depth interview conducted by host Sway with the Ferrari Boyz Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame. Nickel Nine is basking in newfound success as a recent signee to Shady Records and a hit EP alongside his longtime friend and label head Eminem.
On “RapFix Live,” Sway has imparted a tradition that any artist who visits the set has to end the show off with a freestyle. Last week on the show, Game unleashed a few bars as has Beanie Sigel, Yelawolf, Cali Swag District and a host of others previously. As one of the most respect rappers in the game, Royce defied Sway by not dropping the freestyle for quite a unique reason.
“This is the segment I have to explain why I’m not rapping,” said a joking yet semi-serious Royce. “Since we’re living in the Internet era, the technological era, there used to be a point in time where I could kick a verse and I could go do tons of radio stations and kick the same verse. Since the Internet is accessible as it is, as soon as I kick a verse the verse is dead.”
Royce continued to explain further why he holds his verses for himself now. “I can’t go do it again because then I get attacked for recycling lines,” said Royce. “Since I haven’t been in the studio and I’ve been on the road so much, the only verses that I have memorized right now are verses off the Slaughterhouse album. I don’t want to say it because I’d give it away and then have to go rewrite that verse for the album.”
Royce did finalize his point by saying if he had rhymes loaded up to share, he would have dropped one for the fans checking out the show. However, Sway playfully warned future guests that the excuse Royce provided will no longer suffice.
A big salute to Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame and Royce Da 5’9.
