Janelle Monae Remembers Amy Winehouse As A ‘Sweet Girl’

As the entire entertainment community mourns the loss of talented singer Amy Winehouse, an outpouring of support from stars and fans have been ongoing since her tragic passing this past Saturday (July 23). Continuing in that long line of kind words for the fallen vocalist, Janelle Monae offered thoughts on Winehouse and cited their first encounter with one another in an upcoming interview.

In a Q&A session with VIBE magazine, the Kansas City native complimented Winehouse after an initial meeting between the two pint-sized singers showed that the pair had a little bit in common. “I was honored then and I am now that I had the opportunity to share the same tour and stage with Amy this year in Brazil. Each night she came out on stage, she performed effortlessly,” shared Janelle Monae. Monae opened for Winehouse along with singer Mayer Hawthorne on a quick Brazilian tour, just performing four booked shows in the quick jaunt.

Monae continued to gush over Amy Winehouse and talking up their personality similarities by saying, “At our first meeting she was very shy, a sweet girl. Her first words to me were, “It’s so nice to meet you finally, I’m shy, you’re a shy girl like me huh?” She was so giving, she even bought me a swimming suit that she thought I’d like.” It appeared that Janelle Monae and Amy Winehouse hit it off from the onset, with the lasting memory of working alongside a voice quieted far too soon.
