From the moment they broke-thru the underground seams of the World Wide Web, the California rap syndicate known as Odd Future have garnered numerous co-signs and endorsements from rap A-listers such as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and most recently Eminem.
On the set of Bad Meets Evil’s “Fast Lane” video Em explained to Sway his thoughts on OFWGKTA and even noticed a similarity between him and the fledging crew “I still have to go check out everything that they’re doing — but I’ve heard enough to know that it feels like they’re pushing boundaries and buttons, and that’s definitely one of the things that I’m familiar with, especially when I first came out,”. Marshall goes on to cement his “I love it, I love the fact that they’re doing that. And the dudes can rhyme.”
Earlier in the year, Odd-Future front man Tyler The Creator spoke directly to Rapfix while on a Chinatown bus destined for Philly and spoke about the music he drew his inspiration from “Relapse and the f—–n new Clipse album, like them sh—ts made me like f—k I gotta f——in step my s—t up, they pushed me!”
The outspoken 20-year old goes on to say “now Eminem is making f—-in s—t that I’m not really into, he’s my favorite rapper so I’m not even gonna dis him cause he’s in a whole different place, you have to respect it.” What you do also have to respect is what the OFWGTKA has accomplished in such a short time span.
Tyler’s Goblin, released by XL Recordings, debuted at no. 5 on Billboard and the online popularity of Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra has the crooner in studio working on projects for Beyonce and Nas. The Odd Future onslaught doesn’t seem to be slowing down either with Billboard.com reporting Hodgy Beats and Left Brain will be dropping their first album together as MellowHype. Blackenedwhite while be released July 12th through Fat Possum Records. The collective recently signed a distribution deal with Sony RED.
