Skylar Grey Joins Forces With Lupe Fiasco, Slowly Becoming Hip Hop Hook Queen

Wisconsin native and current Los Angeles resident Skylar Grey is slowly morphing into a sought after collaborator and hook singer for high profile hip hop acts as she is now featured on the fast rising Lupe Fiasco single “Words I Never Said” from his third studio album Lasers.

MTV premiered the visual accompaniment to Lupe’s second single this morning (April 27) as the networks MTV Jam of the Week and while the striking Ms. Grey was not featured in the clip, her haunting and soaring vocals left an impression, matching well with director Sanna Hamri’s politically charged visuals and Lupe’s earnest rhymes over Alex Da Kid’s dramatic production.

For the artist formerly known as Holly Brook, Grey has made quite a name for herself as a singer as well as a songwriter. Grey penned the hook for Eminem and Rihanna’s popular collaboration “Love The Way You Lie” and is currently working on an album with the aforementioned Alex Da Kid’s to be released on the producer’s Interscope-backed Wonderland Music label later this year. With one official studio album and three EPs under her original name, the 25-year old Grey isn’t exactly a newbie but her fortunes have certainly changed in the last year.

Skylar’s good fortune began last year when she scored a feature on P. Diddy’s Diddy-Dirty Money album Last Train To Paris. The Alex Da Kid produced track – which also features Jay-Z as a co-producer – was just the beginning for Grey. From there, she was featured on the much hyped debut single and video for Dr. Dre’s Detox album “I Need A Doctor” featuring Eminem. Grey also scored a cameo role in the video as a futuristic healer.

Her latest collaboration with Lupe Fiasco will certainly gain her even more exposure as the buzzing single and video makes its rounds around radio and the Web. With the video making such a strong political statement and Grey’s capable vocals boosting the track to higher level, Skylar Grey will no doubt be a longtime fixture in the world of music.
