New Lil Wayne Video ‘John (If I Die Today)’ Drops, Fans React

Lil Wayne is gearing up his legion of fans for his upcoming ninth studio album Tha Carter IV with the second single “John (If I Die Today)” featuring Maybach Music Group chief Rick Ross getting the video treatment.

The website Dub On The Rocks debuted (or perhaps leaked?) the video for the masses last night (April 19) and the Colin Tilley-directed work has made its rounds on The Web. Properly dramatic at times and featuring a cameo from YMCMB CEO Birdman, the dimly-lit video is as aggressive as the AYO-produced track itself.

Fans on the Web reacted to the song and while some bloggers clearly didn’t feel the song, many fans online weighed in with varying results. On Twitter alone, the comments rained down heavily. Detroit rhymer Danny Brown was diplomatic in his comments on the clip from his @XDannyXBrownX account. “[L]ets just say that was his attempt at doin something ‘underground,’” said an unimpressed Brown. Directly speaking on one of the video’s more curious scenes, @Vis_OFFICIAL asked, “Why is Rick Ross in a wheel chair in the Lil Wayne ‘John’ video??” @JoeTurone added, “I really like Lil Wayne’s new video for “John (If I Die Today)”, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact Rick Ross is in a wheelchair!”

Miss Info posted the video shortly after DOTR and some fans on her site were passionate in their response. “Ross in a wheelchair? ok then…This song is really bad,” added commenter Sean. “Please!!! this song bangs…i give it a week or so…then watch everybody hop on their nuts again…. lol,” responded commenter ogdup. A furious commenter sb2 added, “Its the same freaking lex lugar beat… with ross ’s hook from I’m Not A Star… This is a double recycle….”

Fans on Rap Radar were largely supportive of the video. “Video was dope! Made the song much much better!” chimed in one commenter. Another said, “s–t is hot…and video is hot no doubt but funny how Wayne had to jump on Ricky’s old record to get a buzz LOL.” Another fan quipped, “Good to See Wayne on that hard shit again, comin out tha pen with a vengeance.”
