Kanye West sure knows how to shut down a show with a bang.
Last night (April 17) at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the warm town of Indio, California, superstar rapper Kanye West treated fans to an explosive one-man festival closer, save for guest spots from Bon Iver front man Justin Vernon and Kanye’s legion of dancers. Employing all the big arena tactics he most certainly honed while on his successful “Glow In The Dark” tour, Kanye rocked for ninety minutes nearly non-stop with no hype man and bravely trusting his vocal instrument to carry him the whole way.
Kanye opened up his theatrical performance in operatic fashion with his dancers performing frenetic movements and depicting the anticipation of Kanye’s arrival to the stage. After a massive backdrop was revealed to the audience, the instrumental for Kanye and Jay-Z’s single from their Watch The Throne album “H.A.M.” was dropped and stirring the crowd up accordingly.
Then the Chi-town MC launched into “Dark Fantasy” from his latest album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy – fittingly swooping over the crowd in a crane that landed him in front of the stage. From there, Kanye launched into his barrage of hits such as “Power” and then launched into an energetic version of “Jesus Walks” before moving into a crowd pleasing “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” rendition. Hits such as “All Falls Down,” “Stronger,” and ‘Ye closed out with the moving song “Hey Mama” in which he dedicated to his late mother Ms. Donda West.
Along with the thrilled fans in attendance, those who couldn’t make the trek to Coachella were in luck as the festival was streamed live over the Web via the festival’s Youtube channel and the reaction on Twitter was astounding to say the least. “[J]ust fact he could performed solo for over hour and half and still left audience wanting more showed strength of his catalog,” added fan @milesfan79.
Fan @Legs_for_days added, “OK, Kanye’s killing this and I’m only 15 minutes into it. HE SHUT IT DOWN!” – obviously watching the rebroadcast online and echoing the sentiment many felt last night watching it live.
Perhaps Twitter fan @MrMahamud summed it up in kind with this tweet: “WOW kanye headlined the shit outta coachella @kanyewest #welldonesir.”
Kanye most certainly did just that that.
