You can’t escape the Based God. Why would you want to?
Last week, Lil B surprised many by the features on his 9th Wonder produced track, “Base For Your Face”, which were Jean Grae and Little Brother. Since Lil B is known to work with artists as Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em and rap about pop culture’s favorites, like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, the collaboration with hip-hop favorites was a curve ball to many, but received positively.
VIBE Magazine caught up with 9th Wonder to get the back-story of how “Base For Your Face” came to be. “Lil B reached out to me 3 or 4 months ago on Twitter and told me he’s a big fan of myself and Murs,” 9th Wonder told VIBE. “At the time I didn’t know who he was, so I Google’d his stuff, and I was like “ooo-kay” [Laughs]. I saw “Wonton Soup“ and all that. Then, the Twitter world started going crazy off the fact that I was even talking to Lil B.”
“I got the “Base For Your Face” joint back and I let Phonte hear it — after that he wanted to get on it.” 9th Wonder continued. “He actually sent me his verse the next morning. Jean, apparently had already been talking to B. Really, we’re just trying to bring the balance back.”
Jean Grae shared on the collaboration with XXL Magazine. “I went through about four hours of hell trying to get it done ‘cause technology just wasn’t working for me,” Jean Grae told XXL.“[9th] sent me ‘Te’s verse and [Lil B's] verse and I got it done, sent it back. About 15 minutes later, [9th] was like, ‘alright, I’m putting a link up.’ ”
Should we look out for future 9th Wonder collaborations? We don’t see why not. 9th has high hopes for Lil B, “I told [Lil B] that he could be the reincarnation of Too Short. Like I always thought Wiz Khalifa was the reincarnation of DJ Quik.”
