Two years ago singers Rihanna and Chris Brown hit the lowest points of their careers.
In the wee hours prior to the 51st Annual Grammys (February 8th, 2009) the two were involved in an altercation while riding in their vehicle. The incident left Rihanna badly bruised with one specific photo circulated of Rihanna’s black and blue face. Fast forward years later, more photos have been released, and fans really wish they weren’t.
“Wow they're even showing those old photos of how @Rihanna was beaten on TV, that's rude as hell, & in the past!” one fan @VIIXXIVXCI tweeted. “So did y'all see the raw photos of Rihanna after her & Chris altercation yet?... I know they both wish all of it would just go away,” @KissmyKandee continued.
The photos first popped up online through various gossip blogs on Wednesday (February 23rd) and by Thursday (February 24th), more pics revealed Rihanna with her eyes swollen and half-open with cuts lining the inside of her mouth.
While the evening proved far from detrimental to Rihanna’s career – her albums Rated R (2009) and Loud (2010) both went Platinum – Chris Brown’s journey back to the top wasn't as successful up until recently. The singer managed to fall back into fans’ good graces, starting with last year's BET Awards where he gave an emotional performance and now has an album F.A.M.E. on the horizon, not to mention a number of major radio hits. All was well until new photos from the incident arrived. Wounds were reopened.
“Just saw the new photos of Rihanna after Chris Brown assaulted her, hate pricks who hit women!” an angered @Daikeating tweeted. Many more tweets circulated with “Ouch” reactions and “What if this was you?” in response to the new pics of Rihanna.
Chris Brown took to Twitter to vent his frustration and question the timing of the leak. “It’s ironic how ‘somebody’ put this out right around my album time! Wow! I guess that’s supposed to be strategic chess move. Unbelievable,” he stated. “The Devil is always busy!! But when u have a destiny, nothing or no one can stop what God has planned!” Some fans aren’t pleased with Brown’s response. “Is that what he calls his fists?” @kellidaisy tweeted regarding Brown’s blaming Satan for his misfortune.
While the timing of the leaked photos does raise some eyebrows, time will only tell if it will truly affect Chris Brown’s next chapter of his career.
