Who says Eminem doesn’t love the kids?
A tenacious 14-year old fan of the Detroit bad boy and her diligent efforts to land an interview with the Grammy Award winning star down for a class assignment paid off big time reported the Detroit Free Press – an older story from the Free Press details the arc and development of the interview.
Annie Reed, an eight-grader at East Hills Middle School, made her pitch for the interview to her instructor Kenny Getcher who teaches the school’s seven-week newspaper academic extension class.
Annie, a long time fan of the rapper, used sharp journalistic wit and persistence to find an inside scoop on how she could get close to the brooding superstar. Young Annie notes herself as a proud owner of all of Eminem’s releases and because of that, she used stellar investigative skills to contact Em’s Interscope label to get things rolling.
After a chance email with Slim Shady’s spokesperson, Annie’s fortunes took on an upswing and subsequently impressed Em’s communications staff. “"I just thought, 'Wow, here's a middle-school girl from Detroit who has some guts,'" shared Dennis Dennehy. ”She said this would be the coolest thing to ever happen for her school," Dennehy further added. "We thought Em would really enjoy doing it, too."
February 3 was the big day for Annie and Em’s phone connection as Dennehy phoned the Troy, Michigan native and the young swimmer and lacrosse player got to speak to rap music’s biggest star of the moment and Annie showed great fortitude in the brief 10-minute interview. "I was sitting down; I might have passed out if I was standing up," said Annie. "The first thing he said was, 'Hey, Annie, how you doing?' "
Eminem tackled questions from the young reporter such as which bands and groups influenced him as a kid and Em opened up to Ms. Reed about his drug addiction issues, revealing he’s been clean for 18 months.
Annie doesn’t intend to stop there as the eagle-eyed youngster has set her sights next on Olympic gold medalist and fellow swimmer Michael Phelps for her next big story.
Congrats to Annie Reed.
