When Roman Met Marshall: Nicki Minaj And Eminem At The Grammys

By Rahman J. Dukes

Roman has finally met his psychotic rapping partner in crime, Marshall. Last November Nicki Minaj introduced her coveted rap guest, Eminem, on her now platinum debut album Pink Friday and earlier tonight two of hip hop’s most celebrated rappers finally met in person.

“Nice to meet you” Nicki greeted the Detroit lyricist after his Recovery album snagged a Grammy for Best Rap Album. Em hugged the Queens lyricist in return as he made way to deliver a heartfelt acceptance speech.

The past three years of the annual Grammy Awards have been highlighted with memorable performances from some of rap’s most valuable players. Last year Lil Wayne and then newcomer Drake rocked with Eminem just a few weeks before Weezy was set to begin his one year stretch on weapons possession charges. The year prior a pregnanted M.I.A. sang alongside hip hop titans Jay-Z, T.I., Kanye West and Jay-Z for their joint cut “Swagger Like Us.” But tonight’s pairing of Nicki and Em was a moment the CBS brass didn’t carve out advertisement time for.

Last October fresh off her Hottest MCs In The Game look, Minaj revealed the news of her collabo with Slim Shady.

“We went out on a whim and put it in the air like, ‘It’d be great if he would collaborate with us,’ ” Minaj told Sway. “I remember I kept talking about it, and I thought, ‘It can’t hurt.’ I sent him one record, and he didn’t love it. He didn’t say, ‘I don’t love it’; he just said, ‘Can you send me something that’s a little more me?’ I sent him an e-mail and thanked him for that, just having enough respect. Sometimes people don’t respond. He had the respect, at least, to treat me like a peer.”

If the past two years are any indication, then clearly the Grammy’s are in the business of the Detroit rapper sharing performance time at their prestigious ceremony with other rappers. Maybe at next years show Em and Nicki will be at opposite sides of the mic trading bars as the first male/female Grammy hip hop performances.
