Kanye West On ‘Kourtney & Kim Take New York’: Reality TV and Rap Fans React

By Chris Yuscavage

Kanye West is a busy man these days. He’s still working hard to promote his most recent album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. He’s holed up in the studio with Jay-Z recording their collaborative effort, Watch The Throne. And he just took to his Twitter to announce that his next as-yet-untitled solo album will drop this summer.

But he’s also been getting busy in areas other than music. On Sunday, ‘Ye made a guest appearance on the first episode of E!’s “Kourtney & Kim Take New York” when he stopped through the Kardashian sisters’ NYC-based store DASH for a quick tour — and to do some flirting with Kim, whose name has been attached to Mr. West’s in the tabloids in recent months.

As they say, all publicity is good publicity. But after scoping out the episode, RapFix couldn’t help but wonder whether or not Kanye’s appearance was a good idea. Thankfully, he didn’t say anything too incriminating (though he did have a moment where he got a little too excited about the outfit that Kourtney’s boyfriend Scott was wearing) but an appearance on a reality show about the Kardashians isn’t exactly the most hip-hop move in the world. So we hit the streets — or, better yet, the blogs — to try and get a better sense of how reality TV and rap fans alike felt about ‘Ye’s role in the premiere of the show.

Some fans of the show were a little disappointed that he didn’t get more airtime. “I thought Kanye would be in there a little longer,” said one commenter on People.

Others, like Sandi Shearin, who commented on an US magazine story about the show, weren’t as happy to see ‘Ye pop up on their screen.

“Double gag!” she wrote. “I’m just not a fan of Kanye. His behavior is obnoxious.”

A few fans on rap blog Rap Radar questioned why Kanye wasn’t more vocal when Scott seemed to overlook ‘Ye’s celebrity when he met him for the first time.

“What the f— are you saying, Kanye?” the One asked. “You let dude look on you like you’re a chump?! Now that was some straight bitchassness! I would have knocked buddy into next week if he had talked to me like that.”

And Boxden commenter LongHair made a short and sweet statement about ‘Ye’s appearance after a clip of it was put up in the site’s “Hip-Hop Spot” section. It seemed to echo the sentiment of many of the comments found on rap blogs. “This ain’t hip-hop,” he wrote.

But as with everything that Kanye West is involved in, there was certainly no shortage of opinions from everyone once video of his appearance hit the Web. So while it might not be hip-hop — and while some people probably couldn’t stand him appearing on the show — it’s just another way Kanye’s managed to get his name out there. And RapFix can’t help but wonder what he’s got in store next.
