Well documented in the rapper’s tracks over the years, Eminem’s closeness to childhood friend and deceased D12 group member Proof is readily apparent. Em’s glowing new tribute track “Difficult (Proof Tribute) is further reminder of that fact, thus cementing his deep and emotional bond with the fallen rapper. [Click here to listen to "Difficult"]
Never one to mute his emotions on wax, Slim Shady’s somber and fitting tribute delves deeper into the pair’s friendship and beyond.
“I continuously stare at pictures of you/I never got to say I love as much as I wanted to, but I do/Yeah, I say it now when you can’t hear me/What the f—k good does that do me now?/But somehow I know you’re near me,” rapped the earnest Marshall Mathers.
Born DeShaun Holton, Proof was shot dead on April 11, 2006 by a club bouncer after he also shot another man due to an argument over a pool game. Grief stricken, Eminem all but disappeared from the scene after the incident. Proof’s murder came at a time where Eminem’s fame and struggles with addiction seemingly began to swallow him whole; the rapper was considering retiring altogether in 2005.
In Slim Shady’s semi-autobiographical flick 8 Mile, the character Future (played by Mehki Phifer) was said to be based on Proof. Although Em has denied the movie was a biopic, it is clear to the true fans that Future and Rabbit, the lead character of the film, were celluloid depictions of Slim and Proof.
As a member of D12, Proof was a prominent fixture and eventually released his lone solo LP in 2005 titled Searching For Jerry Garcia
