Even if you're an international hip-hop star, you're still somebody's child.
Nicki Minaj stopped by "RapFix Live" with our own Sway today and talked about her relationship with her mother.
"When I was growing up I was really really close with my mother," shared the Nickster. "I talk with her about everything that's going on in life, and it's still like that now."
And while she calls her mother a buddy, to her elder sibling, the MC was of an annoying little sister.
"I had an older brother and he was quiet. He could sit in front of a TV and watch cartoons or play video games for hours but I could never sit for hours," recalled Nicki. "I wanted attention so bad from my older brother that I would rather him hitting me or us fight than us not communicating. So I would do crazy things and I know, sooner or later, he's gonna punch me. Then I'm going to fight him and then when I start crying I'll go to my mother. It was chaotic but it was all love." Read More...
Today, Nicki Minaj appeared on "RapFix Live" and answered questions you, the fans, tweeted to @MTVRapFix with the hashtag #hottestmcs and #rapfixlive and uploaded to your.mtv.com. Questions began rolling in last Friday as Barbies submitted queries to us—we see you JeanelleB and we love your video questions!—throughout the week for their chance to connect with the Nickster. Make sure you check out our photo gallery of Nicki on "RapFix Live" for more Barbie.
While we usually shoot "RapFix Live" with Sway live and direct here on RapFix and MTV.com, we filmed this week's show last night. But don't worry, we'll get back to our roots with a live show soon.
To celebrate her Hottest MCs in the Game rank and penchant for entertaining faces, we figured today would be a great opportunity to chat with Nicki Minaj and her multiple personalities, including Roman Zolanski and Barbie themselves. We admit ... Roman might've scared Sway a bit when she appeared but the two ultimately got along fine. She even told us that her mother, Martha, would be appearing on Pink Friday, along with Slim Shady, er, Eminem. Yes, Nicki Minaj will be rapping alongside Detorit's own Eminem! We're excited too but not at all surprised. Read More...

Nicki Minaj earned the #6 slot on our Hottest MCs in the Game list and we checked in with a few experts about the MC's ranking and her talent for multiple personalities.
"Even if you cringe at her crazy faces or exaggerated voices, you get the sense that Nicki is controlling her own self-parody," said Miss Info, of New York's Hot 97 radio station. "She seems more hustler and ball-breaker, than dress-up doll or trophy artist (even when on the arm of Lil Wayne or Drake). So, yes, sometimes it seems like we're watching an episode of "The United States of Nicki," but one of those multiple personalities is a girl from Queens who can rap her ass off. And clearly, that's no small feat."
Nicki, also known as Roman Zolanski, follows Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, Tony Yayo, Swizz Beatz, Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, Fat Joe, Lloyd Banks, Wiz Khalifa, and Rick Ross as guests on “RapFix Live.” And like a true MC, she blessed Sway with a freestyle, featuring at least two of her personalities, Roman and Barbie. Many were surprised by the Brain Trust's #6 pick for the Hottest MCs in the Game, but Atlanta's Waka Flocka Flame earned his slot his impact and three consecutive hits—"Hard In The Paint," "Ohletsdoit" and "No Hands" featuring Roscoe Dash and Wale—all of which reached the Billboard charts. But why are we telling you this? Here's why Waka himself thought he, along with Gucci and Nicki Minaj, should've nabbed spots on the Hottest MCs list for 2010.
"Why am I one of the Hottest MCs right now? I drop nonstop music," said Waka of his skill. "I stayed in tune with the world. I stayed on the Internet. I stayed in touch with the fans. I stayed direct, with any problems that anybody ever had with me, I replied back on them. I ain't act like a robot, ain't nobody give me no drop script. I talk from the heart. I just kept it real man, and I got three hard songs." Read More...
You think you know, but you have no idea.
Sure, the MTV Brain Trust announced our final 2010 list for the Hottest MCs in the Game last Sunday (October 24), but there are parts you didn't see. For every Kanye West mention, there was another MC that someone felt deserved to a slot on the Hottest list but didn't make it. So this week, we're serving up the bubble list, comprised of MCs some of the Brain Trust thought earned a Hottest slot but didn't garner enough votes.
We began with Lloyd Banks and today Brick Squad's Gucci Mane is the second MC that some thought deserved a slot on Hottest this year, including Kanye.
"How they ain't gone have Gucci on the top 10 list this year???" the Chicago MC-cum-director tweeted.
Sway began the MTV Brain Trust conversation on how Gucci almost made the final list.
"He just dropped his album The Appeal and he's got the "Gucci Time" single out," said Sway. "At this time last year, it's Gucci who was actually #6 and I remember how much controversy came behind that pick."
MTV News' Steven Roberts who voted for Gucci in 2009, explained why he wasn't as impressed with La Fare in 2010.
"Gucci is one of my favorite artists, but I think the thing that hurts him this year is Read More...
Your leader Nicki Minaj is the #6 rapper on our Hottest MCs in the Game list for 2010 and the first woman to ever join the esteemed round-up. To celebrate her rank, lyrical talent and penchant for entertaining faces, she's appearing on "RapFix Live" today, Thursday (October 28), at 4pm to chat with Sway via a stream here on RapFix and MTV.com at 4 p.m. ET. The show is pre-taped.
Following Sunday's MTV2 premiere of the "2010 Hottest MCs in the Game," we rounded up questions for Nicki Minaj from you, the fans, via Twitter to @MTVRapFix with the hashtag #hottestmcs and #rapfixlive and your.mtv.com. Tweet us throughout the show for your chance to connect with the Nickster.
As for how she made #6, aside from the fact that Nicki had a radio staple this summer with the Annie Lennox-sampling single "Your Love" — which hit #1 on Billboard's Rap Songs chart — she really set herself apart by outshining other MCs on their own tracks. Counting guest appearances among Kanye West, Rick Ross and Jay-Z ('Yeezy's "Monster") and Ludacris ("My Chick Bad") and her show-stealing appearance on DJ Khaled's star-studded "All I Do Is Win" remix, she killed each feature. She also stood out among her crew on Young Money's "Bedrock" and "Roger That" while arguably out-spitting Drake on his own song, "Up All Night." Read More...

Nick Cannon and his superstar wife Mariah Carey have finally confirmed they are expecting their first child. The couple appeared together on the "Today" show on this morning (October 28) to reveal that Carey was pregnant and “expecting in the spring.”
Until now, Carey only commented once on her blog, writing, “I appreciate everyone’s well wishes. But I am very superstitious. When the time is right, everyone will know—even Cindi Berger [my publicist.].”
Meanwhile, her hubby has been the couple’s mouthpiece amidst the pregnancy speculation. In the past, Cannon did not confirm nor deny the news but only explained that his wife “wants to keep as much privacy as she possibly can” and that “she’ll talk when she’s ready to talk.” Read More...

Last night (October 27), Kid Cudi introduced his new album Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager to a selection of industry insiders in downtown New York. The event took place at Don Hill, a dark and smoke filled bar—from an actual smoke machine, silly— which not only looked really cool, but also helped to set the mood for the LP.
Cudi stopped by the MTV News office on Tuesday to talk about his much-anticipated album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. And before we even sat down to get started, he was really excited to play us his new album and each of the MTV News staff that listened was blown away to say the least. Read More...

Lil Jon’s joining the cast for the upcoming season of Donald Trump’s "Celebrity Apprentice." WHAAAT? Yeah, you read that right. The king of crunk is going head to head with the likes of José Canseco, Gary Busey and David Cassidy, among others, in NBC’s competition-based reality show. That explains him flipping pizzas last week at a New York Famous Famiglia pizzeria.
But Jon’s no rookie when it comes to business. In fact, back in 2008 he came in at #13 on Forbes list of hip-hop’s biggest earners by bringing in $11 million. His list of business ventures outside of music includes Crunk energy drink, a wine brand (Little Jonathan Winery) and his own line of Oakley sunglasses.
There’s no doubt in our minds that if anyone can win "Celebrity Apprentice," it’s Lil Jon. Why? Because rappers and hip-hop music industry folks are quite possibly the best salesmen who aren’t actually ... ya’know, salesmen.
Here are ten other hip-hop luminaries who would literally run circles around contestants on "Celebrity Apprentice."
40/40 clubs, minority owner of the Nets, Roc-A-Wear, Carol’s Daughter. You name it, Jay-Z probably has his hand in it somehow someway. The guy hangs with Warren Buffett, you think he can’t outmaneuver José Canseco? Read More...

On Tuesday (October 26) Danny Brown performed at Def Jam's Cipher Sessions show, the first of a monthly showcase held at New York City venue S.O.B.’s. The Detroit rapper surely gained more fans after his set, opening for Big Sean, Emilio Rojas, Cur@!n$ and others, but one of his biggest supporters to date has been G-Unit's own Tony Yayo. And while Big Sean who headlined the event calls Def Jam and G.O.O.D. Music home, Brown is still working on his label situation. RapFix pried some more info out of the Motor City wordsmith on where he may be going and what rock star gives him inspiration.
Everyone is going to be asking about the possibility of Danny Brown joining G-Unit, so what of it?
I mean hey, that’s the big homies. Like I said… [laughs] as far as G-Unit go, they got a lot of stuff they doing so I don’t know. It’s all on Fif at the end of the day.
What are one of the biggest lessons you've learned from being on the road with G-Unit and watching how the mainstream side of rap works compared to the underground?
I feel like the mainstream is blind to what’s going on in the underground while the underground, we know everything that’s going on, 'cause we underground. Read More...
